Hello class,

This is an additional platform where we can build our learning community and know more about our classmates and the class. I'll post course materials here as the semester proceeds. So please come visit us on a regular basis!

Announcement (Monday, Nov.29):

Hello Class,

I hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving weekend! I am writing to let you know that I will not be able to meet with you all today due to my illness. I have had a fever and sore throat, and cannot talk at all…I would like to make the following arrangement for today’s (November 29, 2010) class.

Bill Poole, my graduate assistant will come to the class to collect your presentation projects on my behalf. You project submission package will include: a cover letter explaining how you addressed the reviewers’ comments, your final draft, your initial draft(s) with reviewers’ comments, and your peer evaluations on the project. Bill will also be glad to collect your self-evaluation paper if you are ready to submit it ahead of time for bonus points. Please try to arrive at the class on time, i.e., at 4:25 pm. If you arrive late after Bill has left, you are responsible to submit your package to my mail box at the department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies at Education Business Building Complex at 2.208 by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, November 30. You may call Ms. Jackie Trujillo at 956-882-7678 if you have any questions or need any assistance for your work submission.

There is a great exhibit at the old library on the history of disabilities. I would like for you to go and view it in place of classroom discussions today. It takes about 1 and a half hours or more to read it all. Please write up a short summary afterwards and submit it to me by next Monday. Since our last read is diversity issues in education, I thought it would be good to see the history of individual differences in different cultures.

As to the class next week, you may choose to submit your self-evaluation project electronically or come by my office to hand in a hard copy. Regardless, I will be available to meet with you at my office any time next Monday, Dec. 6 at 4:00-7:00 pm. However, please let me know if you are coming, so that I will be expecting your presence.

I wish I could enjoy our last gifting together! I am aware that several of you have planned to bring the food to cater the class.  Please go ahead and do so, so that the class will enjoy the "last dinner" (joking), before they head to the old library. I have posted my favorite poem on wiki to share with you. I hope you will like it, and most of all, I wish you the best with your future endeavors in your life and career!

Thank your all for making it a great class!

Dr. Yan Yang

Dr. Yang,

I am having a bit of trouble understanding in chapter 7, GPS, heuristcs, artificial intelligence research and ACT-R Theory. Are these methods, theories, or research in which problem solving was based on years ago? Or are these types of problem solvers that a learer can use to solve problems and I dont't quite know if these are still used today?

Nidia,

I am glad that you asked this question. GPS (NOT global positioning system), heuristics, Artificial intelligence research, and ACT_R theory are earlier research on problem solving. They are the precursors of modern problem solving research and had great impacts on cognitive psychology despite the many limitations they had as mentioned in the text. The following are some links with additional information on these topics:

GPS: http://tip.psychology.org/simon.html
heuristics: http://www.acceleratingfuture.com/michael/works/heuristicsandbiases.htm
artificial intelligence: http://library.thinkquest.org/2705/
ACT-R: http://act-r.psy.cmu.edu/

Note. One way of getting deeper at novel topics in the textbook is to trace the citations Gredler used and go back to the original paper. This is actually the best way to clear your thoughts when in confusion.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Dr. Yang,
Can we get articles from education.com? I found some articles there for our topic on motivation, but I'm not sure if you would accept from this source. Let me know if you would like for me to email them to you to view. Thanks :)

Ana, according to our syllabus, as long as it is peer-reviewed empirical research article published after 2005, it will work. But if you are not sure, you may send them to me before you post. Let me know.
